When the "Auto" checkbox is selected, an autoexposure will be performed AT LEAST once for a piece of film.
If you double-click here, the crop will expand to full selection. If you hold down the shift key and double-click, a preview is made. If you hold down the command key, a scan is made.
This will fill the crop selection area with a small image from the scanner. Once the image has been acquired, you may use it as a "thumbnail" of the final scan.
Monochrome previews on 3-pass scanners can be faster, so if all you want to do is to select a crop, you may not need a full-color preview.

Scan pitch is a number that is the denominator in a fraction indicating what proportion of the total available scanner resolution will be needed for the scan. 1 = Full resolution, 2 = 1/2, 4 = 1/4, etc…

This constrains the Height, Width and Output Resolution items. If Pixels are selected as Height and/or Width units, their values will not be allowed to be changed.

The scanner makes a densitometric characterization of the image, and will adjust internal analog parameters to maximize scan quality.
The scanner almost always gets it's focus right. In the rare cases where it is unable to do this, use the Manual Focus controls.
This causes the displayed (and scanned) image to be rotated by 90°.
If you are not very familiar with the technical operation of the scanner, you should not use the "Service" items.
